A reason, a season or a lifetime

It's been a week since we have entered the new year of possibilities. Our spirits are high, our convictions stronger than ever, and we are riding the high that comes with this new season. I am closer than ever to my quarter-life crisis. This puts me in a place of abundant reminiscence. During such a period of walking down memory lane, I could not help but recall the many people who have come and gone from my life in these two-odd decades I have spent on this earth.

And this is what I want to talk about today. How every person we meet are there in our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime...

  1. The fruit that falls off the tree: Some people come into our lives to fulfil a very specific purpose. Most often the reason is some inevitable lesson we need to learn to grow and become our best selves. Such people are like fruits that fall off the tree. We get to enjoy their company and presence for a short while, but as they fade away, all that is left is the seed of the lesson we were meant to learn from their existence.
  2. The flower that blooms for a season: Some people are like seasonal flowers. They bloom most organically, spreading unsurmountable happiness and joy in our lives. Such people are the hardest to forget. They exist in an illusion of a lifetime. But when the time is right, they wither away, only to leave us with the sweet memories of the time spent together.
  3. The roots that grow deep: People who are meant to be with us for a lifetime are like the roots of a tree that grows deep. The connections we build with them are often slow-moving and invisible. But in them lies the strength to last a lifetime. They anchor us to the ground come wind or storm.

More often than not, when we meet new people, we find it hard to place them in the right category. Time then, becomes our greatest teacher, teaching us where they were always meant to be. And I think this was my biggest takeaway from this exercise. To believe that everyone is here in our lives for a reason. They may last till we learn our lesson, an unforgettable season, or our entire lifetime. All we can do is enjoy their company while we have them and be grateful that out of all the people, we could have met...we met them!

To transience and eternity...🥂
